TELEPHONE AND INTERNET

How to use the Telephone and

Voicemail

You will have a telephone either in the common area of your apartment, or in your room. Each telephone has its own unique number, and can be used to make outward and receive inward calls. Calls to the university and the Christchurch area are free of charge. Long distance calls can only be made using prepaid cards or calling cards. You will need to purchase these cards from outlets such as a Dairy. Both UniMart (in the UCSA building) and the Campus Corner Dairy (on the corner of Ilam Road and Rountree Street) sell phone cards.

To make a call to another University (including Ilam Apartments) extension number

Lift the handset and key in the extension number required (4 - 5 digits).

To make a call to a number outside the University

Lift the handset and press ‘1’ for an outside line.  Key in the number required.

To make a long distance call

Lift the handset and press ‘1’ for an outside line.  Follow the instructions issued with your calling card.

Note:  Collect calls must not be accepted at your extension.  To do so will be considered a breach of discipline and action will be taken.

For people to call your room from outside the University

The person calling you needs to dial 03 from within New Zealand or 0064 3 from overseas, then

341 1500, wait for the automated attendant to answer, and then key in your extension number.

Note:  This service is only available from a “touch tone” telephone.

Using your Voicemail for the first time

  • ·         Lift the handset and dial 6989.  The automated attendant will ask you for your mail box number.  This is your extension number and is found under the handset on your phone.
  • ·         Key in your mailbox number followed by the ‘#’ key (or you can simply press the ‘#’ key if you are ringing from your own extension number).
  • ·         The automated attendant will then ask you for your password. Key in ‘12’ followed by your extension number, and then the ‘#’ key.  This is a temporary password.
  • ·         The automated attendant will then ask you to change your temporary password by keying in ‘84’.
  • ·         The automated attendant will then ask you to key in your old password followed by the ‘#’ key.  This is the temporary password that you keyed in initially.  i.e. ‘12’ followed by your extension number and then the ‘#’ key.
  • ·         The automated attendant will then ask you to key in your new password. You choose this – it needs to be at least 5 digits long – once you have keyed it in press the ‘#’ key.
  • ·         If you forget your password, or need your mailbox to be reset, please advise the Office.

Setting up your greetings

To set up your own greeting, key in ‘82’ to access the mailbox command menu and then follow the automated instructions.

Note:  There are two types of greetings.  One of these will be heard by people calling from within the University phone system, and the other will be heard by people calling from external numbers.  You will need to set up both.

To check your messages

If you have received a message, the orange light on your phone will be flashing on and off.  To retrieve a message dial ‘6989’, key in your extension number followed by the ‘#’ key, and then key in your password followed by the ‘#’ key.

Voicemail commands:

2 = Listen to Message / Repeat Message           4 = Previous Message               6 = Next Message

1 = Skip Back 5 seconds                                   3 = Skip Forward 5 seconds

76 = Delete Message                                        9 = Call the message sender

Please note:  Other people may want to use the phone system and because there are a limited number of lines, please limit the length of your call appropriately.

All telecommunications and computer equipment is the property of the University of Canterbury.  Misuse of the telephone and computer outlets or other uunauthorised interference with any part of this equipment will be considered a breach of discipline.

How to Connect to the Internet

The Internet to all the University of Canterbury Halls of Residence, including Ilam Apartments, is supplied by an outside provider – Snap Internet. To be able to access the Internet, all residents need to sign up with them.

You’ll need a network (Ethernet) cable to plug your computer into the network port. You may have one already, or there may be one in your room. If there is not, please come to the office to collect one (these are available free of charge).

Connect your computer to the network plug with the network cable, and open up your Internet Browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Firefox). The Snap Internet signup page should automatically be displayed. If it does not, try entering the address http://prepay.snap.net.nz.

If this does not work, please come to the office to collect a copy of the relevant Snap Troubleshooting Instructions. If you are still having trouble after using these instructions, you can contact the UC IT Helpdesk on extension 6060 for further assistance.

On the Snap signup page, fill out the required details, following the on-screen instructions.

It does not cost you to access University of Canterbury pages (including online course material, videoed lectures etc), but you do still need to connect through Snap to be able to do this. To access all other web pages you will need to pay, and in 2009 Snap is running a ‘Prepay’ system for Internet access.

You can buy prepay credit online immediately if you have a Credit Card. If you wish to pay by another method you’ll need to go to Snap Internet’s Office – which is on Level 2 of the State Insurance Building, 88 Division Street (just off Riccarton Road, next to Westfield Riccarton Mall). Snap also have a stall in the UCSA Building during Orientation Week in February.

Once you run out of data credit, your internet connection will stop working and you’ll be diverted to the prepay page on Snap’s website. You’ll need to purchase more to be able to access the internet again.

Data credit is valid for two months from your first top-up, and will roll over every time you top-up. An email reminder will be sent one week before your credit expires.

If you are after further information you can look at the Halls Connection page on the UC Website (http://www.icts.canterbury.ac.nz/web/network/halls_connection.shtml), or the Snap Website (http://www.snap.net.nz). To contact Snap Internet for accounts or technical assistance, phone 0800 500 638 or email support@snap.net.nz.
