SAFETY
The personal security of residents is one of our highest priorities and the magnet door entry at Sonoda ensures that only residents can gain access to buildings.
We beg residents to lock their bedroom doors because each year items get taken from unlocked rooms. It is crucial that residents do not let people they do not know into the buildings. If someone asks to be let in, you should ask them who they wish to see and go and find that person. That person is then responsible for letting the person in, not you. We also have CCTV over the main entrance at each building at Sonoda.
Christchurch is a safe city by world standards but it is important to take responsibility for your own safety. Use the designated University safe walking routes, walk down main streets; always walk or take transport with a friend, always carry your phone with you and make sure you let people know where you are going if you are leaving the Village overnight.
University of Canterbury Security provides hall and village security through a contracted company. The security staff for Sonoda visit at regular intervals throughout the night. All staff, including the Residential Assistants, keep an eye out for strangers.
